Why Soneva Fushi
Soneva Fushi is the resort that more or less invented the modern barefoot-luxury Maldives. It opened on Kunfunadhoo in 1995 — back when the country had maybe a dozen resorts and most of them were concrete blocks — and has stayed quietly ahead by treating the dunes, the kerosene-lamp lighting, and the no-shoes policy as features rather than affectations. Today it's 64 villas spread across half a kilometre of jungle in the Baa biosphere, with an observatory, an open-air cinema, manta-season access to Hanifaru Bay, and a children's program (the Den) that rivals the family clubs at most other resorts. Bring kids if you have them — Soneva is one of the few ultra-luxury places in the country that genuinely welcomes them. Skip it if you came for sleek-lobby glamour: the rooms are deliberately rustic, the wood is sun-worn on purpose, and the design is closer to a high-end Aman than a Cheval Blanc.
