Why Joali Maldives
Joali Maldives opened in 2018 on Muravandhoo, in Raa Atoll, with a single ambitious thesis: build a resort around contemporary art. It worked. The property has 73 villas (beach and overwater) and a programme of site-specific installations from artists like Misha Kahn and Ben Cullen Williams that you genuinely walk through, not past. Architecturally it's playful — curved roofs, raw timber, treehouse-style overwater villas — and the food is strong, with a Japanese-inflected main restaurant (Saoke) that punches above its weight. Best for couples who care about design and want a less-formal alternative to Cheval Blanc. Skip it if 'art-forward' makes you cringe — it doesn't lean subtle.
