Why Baros Maldives
Baros Maldives is one of the country's older resorts — opened in 1973 and quietly run by Maldivian owners ever since — and it shows in all the right ways. 75 villas on a small, walkable island 25 minutes by speedboat from MLE. No kids' club, no buggies, no entertainment program: this is a properly intimate, adults-leaning 5★ with an exceptional house reef (the lighthouse-restaurant overhang is a manta-ray-frequented spot a 5-minute swim from any beach villa) and a kitchen that's been quietly excellent for decades. Best for couples and divers who want classic Maldives — small, polished, low-key — at a price below most overwater 5★. Skip it if you want flashy dining concepts or a treehouse spa; Baros is deliberately understated.
