What a Maldives Trip Actually Costs in 2026
Flights, transfers, beds and food — the honest arithmetic for a week in the Maldives, at three very different budgets.
The number people quote for the Maldives is almost always a resort number, and resorts are the most expensive way to see this country. The islands themselves are not expensive. What costs money is the water between them.
Start with the flight, because it is usually the largest single line and the one you control least. From Europe expect a long-haul fare to Malé; from India, Sri Lanka or the Gulf it is short and cheap. Book the flight first and let it set the shape of the trip, not the other way round.
Then the transfer, which is where first-timers are caught out. A speedboat to a nearby local island typically runs a fraction of a seaplane, and a public ferry a fraction of that again — but ferries do not run every day and never on Fridays. A seaplane to a far atoll can cost more than the flight from Dubai. If a resort quotes you a bed price without a transfer price, you do not yet know what the trip costs.
Beds split three ways. A guesthouse on a local island is the cheapest real option and buys you a room, breakfast and the run of an inhabited island. A mid-range resort buys privacy, a house reef and a bar. A private-island resort buys silence, and you pay for every hour of it.
Food follows the same pattern. On a local island you eat where the islanders eat and pay island prices; on a resort you eat where the resort tells you and pay resort prices, which is why half-board is worth pricing before you arrive rather than after.
The practical version: decide whether you are buying an island or buying privacy. If it is the island, the Maldives is an affordable country with expensive taxis. If it is privacy, budget for the water — that is the thing you are actually paying for.
